At this time of the year we get a lot of patients asking about detoxification procedures. After holiday indiscretions come the remorse and sick feelings that result form eating and drinking sweets, alcohol and chemicals that many of our healthy patients usually avoid.
The first step in the detox process is to immediately stop the intake of the offenders. Begin by drinking only water and organic green tea. Next, eat only foods that are unprocessed and organic. These two suggestions alone will make a huge difference because most of us have very adequate detox mechanisms already functioning very nicely in our bodies. In the long run, this is the best way to get and stay toxin free.
So, what else can you do to detox? Can you speed up the process?
I find that adding detox baths at home can greatly facilitate the process. Taking a bath with epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) increases cellular detoxification. Anything that touches your skin gets absorbed whether it is toxic or beneficial. Both magnesium and sulfur are necessary with our cells to get rid of toxins. In most people the amounts of these two nutrients are so large that we could not tolerate consuming them orally. For example, large amounts of magnesium will cause diarrhea. Apple cider vinegar baths are extremely helpful for decreasing inflammation as well as eliminating toxic metals such as lead and mercury.
I am frequently asked about fasting. Although fasting will speed the process greatly, it can cause extreme stress on the system. If you are physiologically fatigued, fasting can exacerbate the situation. If you are extremely toxic, the release of toxins from the tissues into circulation can be so extreme that it makes you too sick to function. You may not know how depleted you are until you try to fast. To learn more about adrenal fatigue CLICK HERE.
Detox foot baths can be of great benefit in this process. I have used foot baths for over fifteen years and we have documented improvement with their use. CLICK HERE for more info.
Cellular detoxification can also be enhanced with pulsed electromagnetic field therapy. PEMF forces cells to compress and expand much like a sponge enhancing the flow of toxins as well as nutrients in and out of the cells. CLICK HERE to learn more about PEMF therapy.
