Don’t Let Your Holiday Dinner Ruin Your Diet

Every year at this time I have patients coming back to see me after their Thanksgiving and Christmas meals having gained weight and mad as hell at themselves.  Logically, one meal shouldn’t put five or even ten pounds on a holiday-dinner1person, but sometimes we see this.  Holiday dinners are special times for getting together with family and friends.  Keeping it special without starving  yourself is the the goal.

Here are my suggestions for getting the best of both worlds:

  • Avoid the alcohol.  Alcohol slows your metabolism as well as lowers your inhibitions.  You are more likely to eat more as well as the wrong foods with alcohol in your system. Instead, drink plenty of water before the meal.
  • There are lots of good things to eat at the table such as meat and veggies.  Fill up on those.
  • Avoid the grains and starches including corn, rice, potatoes, sweet potatoes and bread.
  • If you feel the need, take a small taste of the above, but keep it to a teaspoon size.
  • The same goes for dessert. Take a small taste but not a serving.

If you weigh the same after the holiday weekend as you did before consider it a win.
