Seven tips to naturally reduce cravings

One of the greatest barriers to success in weight reduction and detoxification is the battle that some of our patients must endure with their cravings.  The physiology of the process is complex and  involves neurotransmitter balance and blood sugar balance most frequently. The goal is to reduce hunger and impulse eating.

Here are just a few of the tips that we give our patients to help control cravings:

  1. Eat frequently, especially proteins.  Eating frequently helps to maintain an even blood sugar and you’ll be less hungry. Proteins “burn” slowly and will increase metabolism.

  2. Eat as soon as you wake up.  Start the day with a protein based breakfast to boost metabolism.

  3. Have at least three meals and two snacks in between.  Each meal should have a protein component.

  4. Avoid coffee.  Coffee quickly acts to raise blood sugar, then it drops it lower.  People who start their day with coffee tend to eat more later in the day.

  5. Drink green tea.  Green tea will raise metabolism and hold it there for quite awhile. It also is a good “fat burner.”

  6. Avoid all sweet foods, even fruits.  Any thing that tastes sweet, even artificial sweeteners, will give you an insulin response and alter your blood sugar.

  7. Avoid grains.  All grains, through the digestive process, turn to sugar.
